Fractional Laser is an advanced skin resurfacing treatment designed to improve acne scarring, textural irregularities, fine lines, photodamage and visible signs of skin ageing.

The treatment delivers fractional columns of laser energy into the skin, creating thousands of controlled microscopic treatment zones while leaving areas of surrounding tissue intact.

This controlled thermal injury initiates the skin’s natural wound-healing response and stimulates collagen production, dermal remodelling and epidermal renewal.

As the skin heals and remodels, damaged tissue is progressively replaced and the skin can appear smoother, firmer and more even in texture.

CLINICAL INDICATIONS

Fractional Laser may be recommended for:

• Atrophic acne scarring
• Uneven or irregular skin texture
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Enlarged or visible pores
• Photodamage and sun-damaged appearance
• Areas of pigmentation or uneven tone, where clinically appropriate
• Loss of skin firmness
• Crepey or ageing skin
• General skin resurfacing and rejuvenation

Suitability is determined following consultation and assessment of your skin type, pigmentation risk, medical and treatment history, and presenting concern.

HOW DOES FRACTIONAL LASER WORK?

Rather than treating the entire surface of the skin uniformly, fractional technology divides the laser energy into microscopic treatment columns.

These controlled zones of thermal injury initiate a wound-healing cascade while surrounding untreated tissue assists with recovery.

The resulting biological response stimulates new collagen formation and remodelling of existing collagen, while resurfacing encourages renewal of the epidermis.

Treatment depth and intensity can be adjusted according to the indication and desired clinical endpoint.

More intensive settings may provide greater resurfacing and remodelling but are generally associated with increased downtime.

ACNE SCAR & TEXTURE REMODELLING

Fractional Laser can be particularly useful in the management of appropriate atrophic acne scars and significant textural irregularities.

Acne scars can vary considerably in depth, shape and underlying structure. Some scars respond well to fractional resurfacing, while others may require a combination approach.

For more complex scarring, Fractional Laser may therefore form part of an individualised treatment plan incorporating other scar-remodelling modalities where appropriate.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

A topical anaesthetic may be applied before treatment depending on the treatment intensity and area.

During the procedure, clients may experience heat, prickling or a progressively warm sensation.

Immediately afterwards, the skin commonly feels hot and may resemble a moderate-to-significant sunburn.

DOWNTIME & RECOVERY

Fractional Laser involves planned downtime.

For most treatments, clients should allow approximately 5–10 days of visible recovery, although deeper or more intensive resurfacing may require longer.

First 24–48 hours:
Redness, warmth, swelling and sensitivity are expected. The skin may feel tight and appear significantly flushed.

Days 2–4:
The skin may darken temporarily and develop a dry, rough or bronzed appearance. Mild swelling may persist.

Days 3–7:
Flaking, peeling or microscopic crusting may occur as treated tissue is naturally shed. This should not be picked or manually removed.

Days 7–10:
The skin generally becomes smoother and more settled, although mild pinkness or sensitivity can remain.

Residual redness may persist beyond this period following more intensive treatment.

Strict adherence to post-treatment care and daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential during recovery.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Initial improvement may become visible once the healing phase has settled; however, Fractional Laser results continue to develop as collagen remodelling progresses over the following weeks and months.

Improvements may include smoother texture, softened scarring, refinement of fine lines and improved overall skin quality.

Depending on the indication and severity, a series of treatments may be recommended.

Acne scarring in particular often requires a progressive treatment plan rather than a single session.

FRACTIONAL LASER VS MICRONEEDLING

Both treatments stimulate controlled skin remodelling, but they achieve this through different mechanisms.

Microneedling creates controlled mechanical micro-injury without thermal energy.

Fractional Laser creates microscopic zones of controlled thermal injury while simultaneously resurfacing the skin.

Fractional Laser may therefore be selected when a greater degree of resurfacing, texture correction and collagen remodelling is required.

The most appropriate treatment depends on the skin concern, scar characteristics, skin type, downtime tolerance and clinical assessment.
