Cosmelan® Programme
Advanced pigmentation correction. Regulation. Long-term management.
Cosmelan® is a professional depigmentation treatment program designed to reduce the appearance of melasma, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone while helping regulate the biological processes involved in excess melanin production.
Unlike a traditional chemical peel that primarily exfoliates the surface of the skin, Cosmelan uses a multi-stage professional and homecare protocol.
Treatment begins with an intensive professional depigmenting mask applied in clinic, followed by a prescribed homecare program designed to continue pigment correction and help reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
The objective is not simply to remove visible surface pigmentation — it is to achieve progressive pigment correction while supporting ongoing regulation of melanogenesis.
WHAT CAN COSMELAN TREAT?
Cosmelan may be recommended for:
• Melasma
• Hormonal pigmentation
• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
• Sun-induced pigmentation
• Uneven skin tone
• Areas of diffuse hyperpigmentation
• Recurrent pigmentation
• Dull or uneven-looking complexion
Because pigmentation can originate at different depths and have different underlying causes, a clinical consultation is required to determine whether Cosmelan is appropriate.
HOW DOES COSMELAN WORK?
Melanin is produced by specialised cells called melanocytes through a biological process known as melanogenesis.
In pigmentation disorders, melanin production or distribution may become dysregulated, resulting in areas of excess pigment.
Cosmelan uses a combination of depigmenting and pigment-regulating ingredients designed to interfere with key pathways involved in melanin production while accelerating the progressive removal of existing superficial pigmentation.
This dual approach helps address both visible pigmentation and ongoing pigment formation.
THE COSMELAN PROCESS
Cosmelan is not a single appointment. It is a structured treatment program requiring commitment to both the professional treatment and prescribed homecare.
PHASE 1 — PROFESSIONAL MASK
The Cosmelan professional mask is applied at VÉU following skin preparation.
You will leave the clinic with the mask remaining on the skin and will be instructed exactly when and how to remove it at home.
The required contact time is individually determined according to your skin characteristics and treatment protocol.
PHASE 2 — DEPIGMENTATION
Following removal of the professional mask, the prescribed Cosmelan homecare program begins.
During this phase, active pigment correction continues while the skin undergoes renewal.
Consistency is essential.
PHASE 3 — REGULATION & MAINTENANCE
Once the initial intensive phase has passed, treatment transitions toward maintaining results and helping regulate recurrent pigment formation.
This stage is particularly important for conditions such as melasma, which should be considered a chronic and recurrence-prone pigmentation disorder rather than something permanently “cured” by a single treatment.
DOWNTIME & RECOVERY
Cosmelan produces a significant skin response and clients should expect a period of visible recovery.
The most noticeable reaction generally occurs within the first 7–14 days, although dryness, sensitivity and intermittent flaking may continue beyond this period.
First 24–48 hours:
Redness, warmth, tightness and sensitivity may develop following removal of the professional mask.
Days 2–7:
Peeling, flaking, dryness, redness and sensitivity are common. The skin may feel tight and temporarily appear more reactive than usual.
Days 7–14:
Peeling and redness generally begin to reduce, although dryness, sensitivity or intermittent flaking may continue as the skin adjusts to the homecare protocol.
Some clients experience a stronger or longer reaction than others.
The skin should never be picked, peeled or aggressively exfoliated during recovery.
MELASMA & RECURRENCE
Melasma is influenced by multiple factors including UV exposure, visible light, hormones, inflammation and individual predisposition.
For this reason, successful management requires more than simply removing existing pigment.
Even after significant improvement, melasma can recur.
Consistent homecare, appropriate pigment-regulating skincare and strict daily photoprotection are therefore fundamental components of treatment.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Changes in pigmentation may become noticeable during the initial weeks of treatment, with progressive improvement occurring as the full Cosmelan protocol continues.
The degree and speed of improvement vary according to the type and depth of pigmentation, skin characteristics, hormonal influences, sun exposure and adherence to homecare.
Pigmentation management should be viewed as a progressive process rather than an instant correction.
COSMELAN VS LASER
Cosmelan and laser treatments address pigmentation through different mechanisms.
Cosmelan uses topical depigmenting and pigment-regulating agents to progressively reduce pigmentation and regulate melanin production.
Pico Laser uses targeted light energy to fragment selected pigment within the skin.
Not every pigmentation condition should be treated with laser. In particular, conditions such as melasma require careful assessment because excessive heat or inflammation may contribute to pigment recurrence or worsening in susceptible skin.
In some cases, different modalities may be incorporated strategically into a longer-term pigmentation treatment plan.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HOMECARE
The professional Cosmelan mask is only the beginning of the treatment.
Following the prescribed homecare protocol is essential to achieving and maintaining the intended result.
Your practitioner will provide detailed instructions regarding product application, frequency, hydration, barrier support and photoprotection.
Failure to follow the recommended protocol may compromise results or increase the likelihood of irritation and pigmentation recurrence.
COSMELAN AT VÉU
At VÉU, pigmentation is approached as a clinical condition requiring assessment, correction and ongoing management.
Before commencing Cosmelan, we assess your pigmentation pattern, skin type, treatment history, current skincare and potential contributing factors.
Your skin response is monitored throughout the program and your homecare may be adjusted where clinically appropriate.
Our goal is not simply to lighten pigmentation temporarily — it is to create a structured, long-term approach to clearer and more even-looking skin.
Correct existing pigment. Regulate new pigment. Protect the result.
